Oregon School for the Deaf Student Body Government

 

Student Body Government (SBG) gives the young men and women of OSD high school an opportunity to strengthen the skills they already have, discover new ones, and inspire their fellow students to join them in many kinds of events and activities throughout the year.  Student body government is a form of public service in the true spirit of servant leadership.  As a student leader, you will have mentors to support and challenge you, and you will share ideas with student leaders of other schools.

 

As a member of OSD student body government, you will learn:

 

·     Public speaking

·     Time management

·     Team work

·     Collaboration with people beyond your circle of friends

·     How to be comfortable in a variety of social and public situations

·     Present formal proposals for improvements in the school and student life

 

The responsibilities and opportunities you gain from being an elected leader at OSD high school will prepare you for many aspects of your future academic and professional life.

Oregon School for the Deaf Student Body Government Constitution

 

The name of this association shall be the Oregon School for the Deaf Student Body Government.  Its membership is open to all students of OSD high school.

 

The purpose of this organization shall be to provide:

·         A means to improve student participation and communication in student government activities;

·         An understanding and education in the democratic process as practiced in the United States;

·         Opportunity and incentive for leadership;

·         A fostering of closer relationships between Student Government and various school organizations; and

·         A channel for student participation with faculty and administration in projects of school wide concern.

 

Areas of Student Responsibility

I.                    The Student Body Government is responsible to the Principal.

II.                 The Student Body Government shall be overseen by the SBG sponsor/advisors.

III.               The Student Body Government is responsible to the students as follows:

It shall:

1.       Present proposals of student concern for consideration by the faculty and administration, consideration means to talk, think and act accordingly;

2.      Build communication through the school in order to inform students, teachers  and administrators of student interests;

3.      Join faculty and administration on projects of general concern such as curriculum planning and uses of the building;

4.      Provide input in the formulation of a written behavior code;

5.      Give feedback on the handbook describing the school for the information of students and parents;

6.      Organize and carry out an orientation program for all new students;

7.      Program student assemblies; and

8.      Direct student elections.

 

Eligibility Requirements for Student Body Government Officers

I.                    To be able to be nominated and on the election ballot for an Student Body Government position, the candidate must:

a.      Be a student of the Oregon School for the Deaf;

b.      Be a current high school student (in the 9th-12th grade program);

c.       Have no suspensions (either in-house or out-of-school) in the previous school year; and

d.     Be in good standing in terms of grades.

 

Student Body Government Structure

I.                    The Student Body Government shall consist of:

a.      Five elected officers:  President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Relations;

b.      And two representatives from each class elected at large.

II.                 The Student Body Government is responsible to the students as follows:

a.      Present proposals of student concern for consideration by the faculty and administration.  These proposals are to be determined by the general consensus of the student body; and

b.      Build communication through the school in order to inform students, teachers and administrators of student interests.

III.               Student Government members shall be elected as follows:

a.      The five elected officers will be elected in April for a one-year term and shall take office in the first week of June.  The elected officers will be under the guidance of the SBG sponsor; and

b.      Two representatives from each class will be elected at large by their respective classmates in September for a one-year term and shall take office in the last week of September.  The representatives will be under the guidance of two SBG advisors.

IV.              An executive board shall determine the agenda for formal meetings of the Student Body Government.  The executive board is composed of the five elected officers.  The President shall serve as the Chairperson.

V.                All meetings of the Student Body Government are open to the entire student body.

VI.              Duties of the Student Body Government President are as follows:

a.      To preside at meetings of the executive board;

b.      To preside at assemblies of the Student Body Government;

c.       To carry out decisions of the Student Body Government;

d.     To call executive board meetings of the Student Body Government; and

e.      To keep in close communication with the Principal and SBG sponsor.

VII.           Duties of each Student Body Government member are as follows:

a.      To attend all meetings of the Student Body Government;

b.      Attend all organized events overseen by the Student Body Government;

c.       To comply with the signed Student Body Government membership contract; and

d.     To fulfill the responsibilities as outlined in the Constitution.

 

 

Student Body Government Membership Contract

 

All members, officers and representatives, of the Student Body Government shall read, understand and sign the membership contract prior to taking office.

 

“As an elected member of the Oregon School for the Deaf Student Body Government, I, (NAME), agree to abide by the constitution of which the organization is founded upon.

 

In addition, as a member of the Student Body Government, I, understand that I, (NAME), shall be held to the standard at which is appropriate of one who represents the whole of Oregon School for the Deaf.

 

As such, I, (NAME), agree to abide by these expectations regarding maintaining membership in the Student Body Government for the duration of my term:

 

I, (NAME), will abide by the guidelines/rules outlined in the OSD Student/Parent handbook.

 

I, (NAME), will conduct myself in a way that is respectful and cooperative to others.  As such, I will not conduct myself in a way that will result in any type of suspension (in-school or out-of-school) or be assigned no more than two detentions during my term.

 

Furthermore, I, (NAME), understand the importance of attending school and will not commit truancy.

 

I, (NAME), understand that if I am unable to comply with the above expectations, I will forfeit by membership in the Student Body Government and will be unable to pursue an elected position for one year following the end of the forfeited term.

 

Lastly, I, (NAME), understand that the Principal of the Oregon School for the Deaf, after receiving feedback from the Dean, Sponsor, and Advisors, has the final say regarding my continued membership as a member of SBG.”

 

I, (NAME), have read, understand and agree to adhere to this membership contract, showing my dedication and commitment as a member of the Student Body Government.
